Only in the Country
On our road there is a farm that has cattle. Normally they are grazing peacefully while the “traffic” flows by. Well, out here a car every 30 minutes is a traffic jam! Kids on four wheelers don’t count! They are everywhere and they make me very nervous. I know that lots of kids in the country spend lots of time on four wheelers, but I just can’t get used to it. They drive like crazy and half the time they aren’t wearing helmets or any type of protective gear. But that’s a different post.
One morning last summer I was driving to work and I noticed two heifers running along the road. Suddenly I realized they were on the wrong side of the fence! I didn’t know what to do. I’m a city girl; I don’t know how to get a heifer back into a fence. So I called my husband. I told him there were two heifers running down the road. There was a long pause and he said, “What do you want me to do about it?” I said, “I need to call someone. If a car comes around that bend and the heifers are in the road they could get killed and the person in the car could get hurt.” My husband looked up the number for the sheriff’s department. I called the sheriff’s department and this is how the conversation went.
Operator: “Sheriff’s Department.”
Me: “Hi, I live on *Blank* Road and there are two heifers running loose right at the bend.”
Operator: “Again? Ok, we’ll take care of it.”
Me: “Snicker”
Operator: “Giggle. Thank you for calling, m’am.”
Now, I ask you, how many places can you call at 8:00 a.m. and get a laugh like that?
Y’all come back,
Fay

That’s great!! I love that you two were laughing together about this - now THAT’S small town life for you!!
I loved reading your story about the heifers. Thanks for sharing your country stories. There’s nothing better than life out in the sticks.
I grew up on a farm and we were always being woke in the middle of the night or early in the mornings when the cows were out. Let me tell you Dad was really happy when someone was nice enough to let him know.. Like you said not only for the cows but also the people in the cars..

I think we have more 4 wheelers and now golf carts on the roads around here than cars, but I haven’t seen any heifers out lately. I did notice 7 guineas about a mile down our road last week at a neighbors and thought they have exactly as many guineas as we do(we did have 8 but 1 disappeared). Well a couple of days ago I noticed the 7 guineas down the road again at a different spot. Guess what? Those were my guineas. My husband said he suppose it is time to pen them up for a while until they get over the traveling bug.
thanks all!
Farmgirl_dk, What I thought was more amusing than the heifers being loose was that she knew to whom and where they belonged! That was what made me laugh!
Thanks Emma & Mom! We love the sticks.
Gus & Louie, I bet you would have known how to get the heifers back in the fence! I didn’t think about going back to the house and getting a Border Collie. I’ll remember that next time.
Gafarmwoman, It’s a bummer you have to pen up your guineas. I think the Border Collies could help you out there too. The farm where my BCs come from have chickens and the BCs love to put them in a pen. The farmer had to keep shooing the dogs away so the chickens could walk around!
That sounds really, really familiar to me. I never know what I’m going to see when I drive down the road: a moose, a band of enormous turkeys, some alpacas or cows lounging on the road. A few weeks ago my husband swore he saw a zebra. I was certain he was hallucinating until I drove down the same road a day later and saw one too!
